The Information Technology Act, 2000
(No 21 of 2000)

As Amended by Information Technology Amendment Bill 2006 passed in Loksabha on Dec 22nd and in Rajyasbha on Dec 23rd of 2008

[9th June, 2000]

An Act to provide legal recognition for the transactions carried out by means of electronic data interchange and other means of electronic communication, commonly referred to as "Electronic Commerce", which involve the use of alternatives to paper based methods of communication and storage of information , to facilitate electronic filings of documents with the Government agencies and further to amend the Indian Penal Code, Indian Evidence Act, 1872,, The Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891, and the
Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

WHEREAS the General Assembly of the United Nations by resolution A/RES/51/162, dated the 30 th January, 1997 has adopted the Model Law on Electronic Commerce adopted by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law;

AND WHEREAS the said resolution recommends inter alia that all States give favorable consideration to the said Model Law when they enact or revise their laws, in view of the need for uniformity of the law applicable to alternatives to paper-based methods of communication and storage of information;

AND WHEREAS it is considered necessary to give effect to the said resolution and to promote efficient delivery of Government services by means of reliable electronic records,

Information Technology Act 2000 Amendments

The most awaited amendments to the Information Technology Act 2000, which was the first cyber legislation and came into force from 17th October 2000 has finally been passed by the Parliament of India recently. The new amendments main focus is on the cyber security. The said amendment which is a new version of Information Technology Act is hereinafter referred as Information Technology Act, 2008 (ITA 2008).

The new amended act has attempted to bring in comprehensive information security to the IT industry.

Cyber crime are approaching with lightning speed………. Beware ! ! !

Computers have increasingly become a part of our life. It has given a lot of positive benefits to the common people like us; it has also endowed with criminal minds various new opportunities to commit various crimes in the virtual space called cyber space.

Cyber crimes becoming a common phenomenon day by day and we all are coming in the clutches of the same through this way or that way. We are living in the most dangerous virtual world where any thing and everything is possible.
