New Delhi: The 32nd meeting of Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN), the first ever in South Asia, was formally inaugurated by Shri Sachin Pilot and Shri Milind Deora, Ministers of State for Communications and Information Technology here today. ERNET India in association with National Knowledge Network (NKN) and with the support of Department of Information Technology, Govt. of India is organizing 32nd meeting of APAN from 22-26 August 2011. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sachin Pilot Minister of State for Communications and IT said APAN has become the focal point for data sharing and this meeting will provide Scientists and researchers an opportunity to update themselves on the latest developments in Networking. The other MoS in the Ministry Shri Milind Deora said on the occasion that this Government is committed to creating an environment conducive for research and innovations.
APAN refers to both the organization representing its members, and to the backbone network that connects the research and education networks of its member countries to each other and of the research networks around the world.. APAN members are the entities representing research and education network interests in the countries of Asia and Oceania. ERNET India is a primary member of APAN.
This 5-day event will highlight tutorials, oral presentations and demonstrations covering advanced network technologies and applications. 32nd APAN five-day programme spans network and application technologies, as well as case studies of advanced networking in areas such as:
■ Network Technology,: IPv6, Wireless & Mobile networks, Optical networks, Adhoc & Sensor networks, Security, Future Internet
■ Applications: Medical, High Definition TV, e-Science, Middleware and e-Culture
■ Natural Resources: Agriculture, Earth Monitoring, and Environmental sensors
The event will provide opportunity to budding networking professionals and researchers to learn and experience what is new in this area. The objective of APAN meeting is to provide opportunities for
i. Scientists and researchers to understand the current state and future plans for networking and cyber infrastructure available in Asia Pacific region and around the world.
ii. Discuss and collaborate with each other on various aspect of advance computer networking areas, for example IPv6, Wireless & Mobile networks, Optical networks, Adhoc & Sensor networks, Security, Future Internet. Applications which require high speed network will be demonstrated and case study will be presented.
The programme on use of network in medical applications will be interesting because using high bandwidth network endoscopy and surgery will be relayed to different stations across the world over Internet Protocol. This application can be of great use in Indian conditions as National Knowledge Network is being rolled out in India connecting hospitals and medical colleges with very high bandwidth. Hospitals and medical colleges can use this technology for educational purpose.
The Government of India has planned the National Knowledge Network (NKN) to connect major educational institutes and research organizations across India with each other, using high speed broadband connections. NKN will bring together stakeholders in the fields of science, technology, higher education, research & development, and governance with speeds of the order of tens of gigabits per second. ERNET is another initiative of DIT started in 1986, with UNDP support, to develop India’s computer networking capability. Today, ERNET is the largest nationwide terrestrial and satellite network with points of presence located in premier educational and research institutions of India. It has made an important contribution in establishing the e-Infrastructure for India’s education and research community.
Shri N. Mohan Ram, Director General, ERNET India, Prof. Jian Ping Wu, Chairman APAN Board, Shri N. Ravi Shanker, Additional Secretary Dept. of Information Technology, Dr. B.K. Gairola, Director General National Informatics Centre, Prof Ajit Kembhavi and Dr. Ashish Mahabal and other senior officials of the DIT were also present. The meeting is attended by over 300 delegates from over 19 member countries.
