The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the launch of a comprehensive Framework for Geo-Tagging of Payment System Touch Points, aimed at strengthening digital payments infrastructure across the country. The initiative was outlined in the Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies accompanying the bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement 2021–22.

The move is part of the RBI’s broader strategy to deepen digital payments and ensure inclusive access for all citizens. By enabling the geo-tagging of payment touch points—including Point of Sale (PoS) terminals, QR codes and other acceptance devices—the central bank seeks to map and monitor the availability of payment infrastructure nationwide.

According to the RBI, geo-tagged data will allow for more accurate insights into regional distribution gaps and help drive targeted policy interventions. These measures are expected to ensure optimal deployment of payment acceptance points, particularly in underserved and remote regions.

With this framework, the RBI aims to further accelerate the adoption of digital transactions and enhance the overall resilience and reach of India’s payments ecosystem.
