I have came across on report on the cyber crimes in which it has stated that United States has integrated almost every information to Information Technology but also it leads in the cyber attacks as compared to other countries.
Somewhere in 2005 – 2006 I read that the annual loss to various Organisations in United States was estimated to be around $ 67.2BN i.e. in rupees let’s say Rs. 2, 68, 000 Crores. The prime source which is causing the financial loss is Virus Attacks and sub – prime source is Unauthorised Access which is commonly known as Hacking.
Today in Local Pune news papers there is news which states some Engineer lost INR 83,000 due hacking of the Internet Banking Password which is self explanatory.
Now lets see how the Cyber Crime is different…… although there are a lot of similar elements between crimes in the cyberspace and those in the real brick-and-mortar space; what we call as world.
Cyber crimes many times may not necessarily be committed only by criminals of the real world, but most commonly highly intelligent people, who feels hacking, is an intellectual challenge commits cyber crimes.
The most outstanding feature of cyber crime is that a computer boosts the power of intelligent criminals in terms of enormity. Thanks to the Internet, Communication is at the speed of light. In this incredibly fast world, crimes committed with devastating effect.
The augmentation of the individual’s supremacy and power on the computers and unbalanced power he derives in committing crimes is another interesting facet where cyber crimes differ from conventional brick-and-mortar crimes. Do not forget that the world of computers and Internet is a 24x7 world. The cyberspace and people in the cyber world never ever sleeps. There is no time when one can relax in the 24x7 cyberspace.
Eternal vigilance is said to be the price of liberty. Undying vigilance is the solution to tackling cyber crime. Even though technology imparts the basis for the cyber world, the same technology needs to be used for detecting and tackling cyber crimes thus helping the victims of the cyber crimes. In this perpetual game of catching up, one has to always remember Oscar Wilde’s perceptive comment -- ‘The thief is an artist and the policeman is only a critic’.
The another interesting, perhaps the utmost important aspect other than the technology so far as the cyber crimes is concerned is HUMAN BEING.
The object for common cyber crimes may not only be an intellectual challenge for the person committing the cyber crime, but also could be frustration, impotent anger of some disgruntled employee etc. Most of the studies related to cyber crimes shows that 80 % cyber crimes are committed by insiders. I got opportunity to interact rather chat with the world famous hacking long back who had stolen financial data, also ratified that he could able to steal the data successfully just because of the some internal compromising element which was working for him at the time of hacking attempt done by him. “So please remember hacking cannot be done by single person sitting outside and in one day” the famous hacker replied and vanished never to come back.
The typical reaction of the cyber crime victim is feeling of frustration and helplessness resulting that 80% cyber crimes go unreported. I always say understanding human psychology and motivation is extremely vital and significant while moving in the cyberspace.
In the ultimate analysis, it is the human being who needs to be secured first by educating him about the various aspects of cyber crimes, cyber laws, cyber ethics, internet threats before making his computer secure through various security products.
Securing every home, every person is required to combat the war against the cyber criminals and protecting the home though obtaining cyber education from reputed institutes like Sedulity Solutions become significant.
Wishing you all, the very best and secure cyberspace………
